It Depends on the Target

Today is the one-year anniversary of the London bombings that claimed the lives of 52 people. The Wall Street Journal marks the occasion with a rather alarmist little comment piece [Subscription Only] that appears on their habitually alarmist opinion page.

The unsigned editorial sites the findings of an poll conducted to gauge the opinion of the 1.6-million strong Muslim community in Britain. Now, polls are notoriously unreliable and prone to manipulation (as the old saw goes: It all depends on how you ask the question) but these findings were so intriguingly disturbing that I feel compelled to reproduce the nugget below:

“It turns out that 7% of British Muslims believe that suicide attacks against Britain can “sometimes” be justified, according to a Populus poll. That’s 110,000 people. Another 20% believe such attacks can be justified if the attack is against the British military. Target British Jews, and support rises to 37%.”

  1. Mike Harrison Says:

It continues to defy me that followers of a supposedly peaceful religion can condone violence and killing, regardless of the target. This is true for both Muslims, who were polled here, and Christians, who continue to condone killing and violence to serve various interests and goals. I am reminded of an excellent Onion article that appeared a few years ago: “God Angrily Clarifies ‘Don’t Kill’ Rule” (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28151)
