Restraint, Putin Style

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday commenting on the conflict in the Middle East:

“No hostage-takings are acceptable. But neither is the use of full-scale force in response to these, even if unlawful, actions.”

Putin commenting on Sunday:

“We consider Israel’s concerns to be justified,” Putin said. “At the same time, we work under the assumption that the use of force should be balanced. And, in any case, bloodshed should stop as soon as possible.”

Presumably, the 12-year old Chechen bid for political independence has been met with a similarly proportionate, “balanced,” and restrained response from the Putin government. I guess it all depends in how one defines the terms.
