A Stronger Advocate Than Sen. Kennedy?

December 9, 2006

Can Mitt Romney’s stance on gay rights really be as opportunistically bigoted as this 1994 letter suggests?

Election Challenge: Step Right Up

November 3, 2006

A colleague of mine and employee of The Manwrites in response to my challenge:

“For those of us who make money, the prospects of paying less in taxes are substantially higher under the Republican platform than under the Democrats. The more money you make, the more likely this is to be true.

However, for those of you who make no money, the argument doesn’t really hold water. The Republicans want you to flee to Canada… unless you’d like to join the military.”

The argument from greed or cash-money has its merits. But putting aside for the moment the question of whether potentially lower taxes can outweigh the torture, spying, lying and criminal incompetence in the botching of the Iraq operation (not to mention losing Afghanistan) of which the administration and its cohorts are guilty, won’t the massive deficit spending the Republicans are friskily engaging in jeopardize any potential savings from tax cuts in the near future? Someone’s going to have to pay for that shortfall and it’s either going to come in higher taxes down the line or cuts in services that actually make a difference to middle-class tax-cut hungry voters: healthcare, education, port and border security, social security, law enforcement. Not to mention the risk of inflation with the current economic policy, which could wipe out the value of those middle class assets pronto.

My friend in the white power structure does not disagree. He merely points out that as a Republican one is quite clearly not thinking about the future. But as to my counterargument, he concedes I’m not wrong. Sorry Whitey – no Rummy for you!

We Have a Contend-a!

November 3, 2006

Just a few cyberspace moments after I threw down my electoral gauntlet, a brave soul has taken me up on the challenge. In response to why a voter of sound mind should opt for the Republicans on November 7th, a frothing fundamentalist writes:

“Vote Republican because Republicans are steering us, with unprecedented velocity, towards Armageddon, when we will all shoot up to Heaven in Rapture.

It’s not too late, Jew.”

On the face of it, an unassailable argument. But wait, as all good bible-believing Christians know, the Rapture precedes Armageddon. I mean, Jesus, any fundie with half a brain and the phone number for a male escort knows that. I’m afraid we must have an imposter on our hands, and judging by his rhetoric a self-hating Jew. Curse his oily hide and horned head.

Oh and by the way, I said a voter “of sound mind.” Anyone who believes in imminent apocalypse as part of the prophetic scheme of premillennial dispensationalism is, to put it politely, batshit insane. Sorry but my tolerance for the crazy religious only goes so far.

Da Election, Yo

November 3, 2006

It seems to be obligatory (o-blog-atory?) for every blogger to weigh in on the elections and make an endorsement as to which way people should vote. But I just don’t have the energy – the case is so overwhelming, the arguments so crushing, the ‘brainers’ so non-existent, I can’t think of a single thing I could add to what’s already been said. So let’s turn this on its head. I challenge anyone to give me a convincing argument for why any voter of sound mind should vote Republican on November 7th (and yes, it is November 7th contrary to the letters Republicans sent out to voters saying that due to high voter registration Democrats would be voting on the 8th and Republicans on the 7th, the sheisty motherfuckers). Winning entrants will receive a talking action Rummy doll courtesy of small-d (he says the same thing! Over and over!).

All others will receive a crowbar to pry their craniums from their rectums, budget permitting.
